چکیده

We show that the irradiated accretion disk model can account for all the optical and infrared observations of the anomalous X-ray pulsars in the persistent state. While placing an upper limit on the inner disk radii, and thus on the strength of the dipole component of the stellar magnetic field, the model fits do not constrain the outer disk radii. And while magnetar fields ( G) in higher multipoles are compatible with the irradiated 14 B 1 10 ∗ disk model, magnetic dipole components of magnetar strength are not consistent with optical data. Subject headings: accretion, accretion disks — pulsars: general — stars: neutron — X-rays: bursts

Nature of the Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars

I summarize recent developments in the magnetar model of the Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars, give a critical inventory of alternative models for the AXPs, and outline the improved diagnostics expected from present observational efforts.

On Radio Quiescence of Anomalous X-ray Pulsars and Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters

In the hot environments of the anomalous X-ray pulsars and the soft gamma-ray repeaters, as indicated by their luminous, pulsed, quiescent X-ray emission, γ-rays generated from the inner gaps may have shorter attenuation lengths via two photon pair production than via magnetic photon splitting. The AXP/SGR environments may not be pairless, even if photon splitting could completely suppress one ...

Studies of Neutron Stars at Optical / IR Wavelengths

In the last years, optical studies of Isolated Neutron Stars (INSs) have expanded from the more classical rotation-powered ones to other categories, like the Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) and the Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters (SGRs), which make up the class of the magnetars, the radio-quiet INSs with X-ray thermal emission and, more recently, the enigmatic Compact Central Objects (CCOs) in supernov...

The strongest cosmic magnets: Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars

Two classes of X-ray pulsars, the Anomalous X–ray Pulsars and the Soft Gamma–ray Repeaters, have been recognized in the last decade as the most promising candidates for being magnetars: isolated neutron stars powered by magnetic energy. I review the observational properties of these objects, focussing on the most recent results, and their interpretation in the magnetar model. Alternative explan...

Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars: Magnetar Candidates

Baade & Zwicky (1934) were the first to envision the formation of neutron stars as the end product of a supernova explosion. Their forward thinking was not vindicated for another three decades, with the discovery of the first radio pulsars by Bell and Hewish (Hewish et al. 1968). What Baade and Zwicky could not have anticipated, however, was the menagerie of astrophysical objects that are now a...
